With the in-depth study of photoreceptor proteins in the field of botany, photogenetics technology has begun to use the optical switching activity of plant photoreceptors to control intracellular signal pathways and applied in the fields of synthetic biology.

UV-B resistance 8 (UVR8) is an UV-B sensing protein found in Arabidopsis thaliana. UV8 is responsible for sensing ultraviolet rays in the range of 280-315 nm and initiating plant stress response. It is most sensitive at 285nm, close to the lower limit of UVB.

In the absence of UV-B light, UVR8 is inactive as a homodimer. Under UV-B light irradiation, the internal tryptophan residues in UVR8 will sense the light signal, and the protein will be activated by light through dimer to monomer conversion within a few seconds.

UVR8/COP1

UV Receptors

Constitutive light signal regulator 1 (COP1) is a central light signal regulator that can interact with monomeric UVR8 in a few minutes to initiate UV-B light signal transduction in plant cells. The physical interaction between UVR8 and COP1 mainly depends on the C-terminal VP motif of UVR8 and the C-terminal WD40 domain of COP1.
